The five modes of documentry

Expository : Developed by the American documentary theorist Bill Nicholas. Expository documentarys are where the film maker is the 'voice of god'. The narrator/filmaker has the authoritative role and adresses the audience directly. The images match the voiceover and also link in with the video clips. Expository documentarys can include interviews to support the argument it presents. It has a conventional narrative structure (Begging, middle and end). Its very didactic (gives lots of information) and the most common of all.

Observational : Developed by the American documentary theorist Bill Nicholas. The film maker does not get involved in the production (fly on the wall style). The camera work can be different like having very long shots. They tend to avoide voice overs, when there is one its non judgmental. A good example of observational documentarys is wildlife programmes (slice of life).

Interactive : Develpoed by the  American documentary theorist Bill Nicholas. Was discovered when mobile filming equipment was made, makes the film makers aspect visable. Finds a way of directly enngaging with individuals without interviews. Helps film makers account for past events by being able to use old footage within their documentary. Includes intrusive questions and opinions. The filmmaker can either been seen  or not seen. Has a logical progression throughout the documentary (begining, middle and end). In the end the audience is left to decide their own conclusion.

Performative : Developed by American documentary theorist Bill Nicholas. Used in the hollywood movies, is the more glamorised of documentarys. Film maker stars in the movie. Its about the film makers subjective opinions and  views. The film makers aim is to get the audience to feel and experience what they see (evoative-makes you have emotion) its a very stylised mode. It mix's a variety of different modes to link images and ideas together. The film maker also wants to get across how theyre knoledge helps gain a wider knowlege in socciety.

Self evaluation Unit 20: Factual Production

What I have discovered about this unit is that it's all about the different stages of making a short movie such as the Pre-production, production and post-production.

what I must achieve by the end of this unit is a short film That is appropriate to the subject, the theme, the genre and my target audience. I should also be able to Outline the conventions of factual media And review/evaluate my own and piers work.

Will we be learning about how to handle the cameras during this unit?
